Top 6 Myths about counseling and therapy in San Ramon, CA
Hollywood’s depiction of therapy is entertaining though can be misleading. Think Sopranos, Shrinking, In Treatment, and Good Will Hunting… Admittedly, these movies and shows are what drew me to the work in the field though I quickly learned what we see on the screen is not what therapy really looks or feels like.
Some people’s misconceived perceptions about therapy might be what keeps them from going. Here are some of the top myths I hear about therapy:
Myth 1: There are no qualified therapists in San Ramon, CA
Finding a therapist or counselor who is a good match for you can feel challenging. Searching on the internet is a great start and you will find many listed. I wrote an entire blog on how to find a therapist in San Ramon, CA. You can read it here.
Myth 2: There are no therapists in San Ramon who specialize in infertility
San Ramon is a suburban area with many children and families. Amongst the community are several fertility clinics helping women and men grow their families. Along with the clinics are therapists, like me, who are trained to support individuals with on their fertility journeys. It is very important to find a therapist who specializes in the area you want help with.
Myth 3: A therapist will just listen and nod their head
Movies, sitcoms, and comics have stereotyped therapy this way. Therapists are trained to listen but there is much more happening in sessions. Therapists set goals for treatment and counseling interventions we use to help you handle your issues. You can expect to be asked thoughtful questions, offered new ways to think about your issue(s) and taught new ways to cope.
Myth 4: Going to the gym is a substitute for therapy
Exercise is a large component of good mental health, but it is not the only one. Sweating cannot bring you clarity or resolution in the same way as talk therapy. Some concerns are best handled by talking to a professional.
Myth 5: Therapy is expensive and for the rich
Therapy can be a big investment and it is understandable that paying $175-$225 per session is not feasible for everyone. Many employers offer Employee Assistance benefits which include free counseling to employers and their families. In addition, many therapists accept insurance or offer sessions on a sliding scale fee. When you decide it is the right time for therapy, please do not let money be a barrier.
Myth 6: I will have to talk about things in my past that I don’t want to talk about
Therapists are not in the business of torturing their clients. In counseling, the client is in control of the topics and pace of each session. Being open in counseling is an integral part of success, but you will never be forced to talk about something you do not want to share. Your needs and desires are always the most important part of the counseling relationship.
